School Water and Sanitation
Mhlathuze Water was appointed in November 2010 by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education as an implementing agent for sanitation and water programme. A total of 127 schools were identified and were prioritised by the Department in five municipal Districts: Amajuba, Umzinyathi, Uthungulu, Zululand and Umkhanyakude. Provision of water to these schools, which forms part of the contract, also depends on the area where each school is located. Therefore three ways of ensuring water supply have been identified. These will be through municipal pipeline, boreholes and also rainwater harvesting.
All toilets are VIP unless the school already has flush ones, then additions are installed. Though each school has its own unique characteristics, great standards are being maintained for health and hygienic purposes. The value of contract accommodating all 127 schools is R 79 million. In terms of ratio, pupils to a toilet, DOE has a set ratio which Mhlathuze Water adhere to and it depends on age of pupils as well as gender.
